Florida Ranching
The natural land spit at De Soto Point creates a safe, deep harbor which became known as "Cattle Dock Cove." Docks were built in the late 1800s for loading cattle onto boats for shipment to Key West and Cuba for sale. Cattlemen may have used the Tabby House — now the Tabby Ruins — as a campsite while waiting to load their herd aboard steamers. The cattle docks were used until around 1909, when they were abandoned and left to deteriorate.
