Why did you decide to get married at Old Spencer Mill? Old Spencer Mill is a beautiful, nature-filled site that fit the personality and mood we wanted for our wedding. It offers a 4000-square-foot rustic facility beside a beautiful creek with abundant wildlife. Old Spencer Mill is also part of the local history of our tiny town: The Parker's Creek area was settled in 1804 by Moses Parker and his family. After Moses' death in 1852, his daughter, Indiana Territory Parker, and her husband, Daniel Spencer, remained here and raised a family. The earliest documentation establishing the operation of Spencer's Mill appears just before the Civil War in 1856. The mill was operated by Daniel & Indiana's son, Samuel Spencer, as a water turbine driven corn & flour mill. The mill became the center of the community, where everything from rifles to coffins were manufactured. Spencer's Mill boasted a wood & blacksmith shop, two stores, a saw mill and a post office. Trish & Tim Miller purchased the mill in 1993 and began a faithful restoration. It is located just off the intersection of Abiff & Spencer Mill Road on Old Spencer Mill Road in southeastern Dickson County, Middle Tennessee. What's behind the dogwood theme? You've probably noticed all the dogwood flowers adorning our Web site and correspondence. We chose the dogwood as our theme because of its humble, yet unique look and relation to our new home on Dogwood Lane. The crooked little flowering trees (Cornus Florida) provide tremendous beauty during the spring, when their flowers are among the very first to greet the season. For the remainder of the year, their rich foliage and delicious berries make them a popular hangout for dozens of species of birds. Dogwoods are also the subject of an interesting myth, which attributes religious significance to their unusual markings (see: The Story Of The Dogwood Tree). Why did you decide not to have a formal wedding with bridesmaids, groomsmen, etc.? We decided on a relaxed, informal gathering of our loved ones in which to exchange vows. We wanted the event to be stress-free and inexpensive for everyone involved, so we decided to make it a humble, private, simple ceremony. What should I wear? Anything you want! You can wear a tux, leisure suit, jeans, a scary clown costume -- it's up to you. The most important aspect of the day is your being there to share it with us. If you decide to come in your birthday suit, just know that we'll be posting our wedding pictures on the Internet (ha ha). Where are you registered? We are registered at Sears, Amazon.com and Hecht's (details on the Gift Registry page). We would also be grateful for donations of art for our bare walls. Your presence is the best gift of all -- please give us that above all else. |
